The Client:

 

A government client is looking for an Electronics & Electricals Expert to join them on a 3 month contract. This position will be based in  Bristol, London, Newcastle or York (3 days per week).

 

Job Summary:

 

The Circular Economy Growth Plan Delivery Team leads the UK Government’s work on sustainability across agrifood, textiles, transport, and electronics. In the Transport Electricals and Batteries space, they lead Defra’s reform agenda for batteries, tyres, and end-of-life vehicles, including digital innovation. They oversee Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and vape regulations, ensure compliance with hazardous substances rules, and support EU alignment under RoHS. Their work strengthens circularity and regulatory progress across multiple sectors.



  • Provide specialist advice on electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), including collection, repair, reuse, and recycling systems, ensuring policy proposals reflect operational realities and industry best practices.

  • Shape policy delivery for EEE under the Circular Economy Growth Plan, contributing technical insights to improve recovery rates and compliance mechanisms.

  • Advise on strategies to enhance circularity, including design for repairability, reuse models, and recycling technologies for electrical and electronic products.

  • Develop robust policy proposals, including defining issues, generating options, sourcing evidence, engaging stakeholders, and preparing papers and presentations for senior decision-makers.

  • Contribute to strategic planning, situating EEE-related work within the wider circular economy roadmap and supporting long-term goals for resource efficiency and net zero.

  • Engage with stakeholders across manufacturers, recyclers, repair networks, and regulators, building consensus and supporting practical implementation of policy changes.

  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, sharing expertise and supporting a one-team ethos across policy, technical, and delivery colleagues.

  • Bring innovation and constructive challenge, introducing new ideas and approaches to improve EEE recycling and reuse system.

  • Upskill Civil Servants, sharing specialist knowledge through mentoring, workshops, and technical guidance to build internal capability.

  • Provide clear, evidence-based advice and briefings to senior officials and ministers, translating technical detail into actionable recommendations.



As the electricals and electronics expert, you will have deep subject matter knowledge and expertise in:



  • Electrical and electronic equipment, bringing practical insights from collection, repair, and recycling programmes; We would be particularly interested to hear from those with experience in the reuse and remanufacturing space who can think creatively about keeping electrical equipment and component materials in circulation for longer. While we are most interested in you bringing your knowledge and expertise to our work, we would expect secondees to be able to demonstrate an aptitude for:.

  • Developing policy proposals: define the issue to be addressed, devise options, source an evidence base, engage stakeholders, and recommend a preferred option, all involving preparation of papers and presentations.

  • Thinking strategically and programmatically: situate their individual work within the context of a wider programme, and contribute to defining the long-term goal of the wider programme.

  • Working collaboratively: we are an interdisciplinary directorate and have a one team ethos .

  • Innovate: we are open to, and want our secondees to bring, new ideas and constructive challenge to our work You will also be required to upskill the Civil Servants you work with by sharing your knowledge and expertise while here.
