- The Client:
A government department client is looking for a People Business Partner to join them on a 3 month contract. This position will be based in London/ Hybrid.
Job Summary:
The client is seeking an experienced People Business Partner to provide short term cover within a small but high pressure HR/People & Culture team. The role requires someone who can immediately step in, manage a demanding ER caseload, and support senior stakeholders across both operational and enabling functions. This is a senior generalist BP role with a high volume of complex, hands on employee relations work. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in civil service or law enforcement style environments, where stakeholder challenge and legal risk awareness are common.
Key Responsibilities:
Employee Relations (Core Focus):
- Manage a heavy ER caseload (approx. 25 concurrent cases).
- Handle misconduct, grievances, harassment, attendance, and sensitive issues.
- Support and coach managers through formal processes; draft correspondence and scripts.
- Contribute to ongoing Employment Tribunal (ET) cases.
Stakeholder Management:
- Act as the face of the People & Culture team for approx.10 stakeholders within assigned business areas.
- Provide ongoing updates, guidance, and support to Heads of Division and senior leaders.
- Ensure issues are managed swiftly and don’t fall through the gaps.
People & Culture Delivery:
- Maintain continuity of HR support while permanent staff are absent.
- Support organisational culture modernisation efforts.
- Lead monthly stakeholder HR meetings focusing on data, insight, and case discussions.
- Collaborate with internal HR specialists; no external ER provider is used.
Environment & Expectations:
- Fast paced, reactive, “firefighting” environment.
- Requires resilience, confidence, and strong relationship building skills.
- Operates within a culture similar to legal/law enforcement organisations with hierarchical structures and high scrutiny.
Essential Criteria:
- Strong HR Business Partnering experience.
- Extensive hands on ER casework experience.
- Ability to navigate complex, sensitive, or contentious HR matters.
- Experience supporting Employment Tribunal processes.
- CIPD Level 7 (or working towards) + Chartered/Fellow membership or equivalent experi-ence.
Desirable Experience:
- Background in law enforcement, legal, AGO, GLD, TIS, or policing environments.
- Experience in smaller organisations (?500 people).
- Familiarity with Oracle HR systems.
An active SC clearance is required for this role. At a minimum, candidates must be eligible and willing to undergo security clearance. Due to the short-term nature of the contract and the urgency of the requirement, the client may prioritise applicants who already hold active SC clearance and meet all essential criteria.
