The System Administrator is also expected to contribute to the refresh of the system documentation (high level design, low level design, maintenance schedule, accreditation documentation sets) where appropriate. In addition, they should also support accreditation, auditing and lab management activities where required.
System Administrator is required for an internal project. This role has responsibility for the administration of three computer systems used by between 20 and 100 people to develop, experiment with and integrate novel concepts for the management of data and information, and the demonstration of these to defence customers.
The three computer systems are client-server architectures with virtualised servers, and with local area, networks comprising full- and thin-client computer systems in computer laboratories within the same purpose-built facility. The systems include those with SANs and two connectivity to wide-area networks and logical separation using VLANs between groups of users (multi-tenancy).
It is expected that in the future, responsibility for other computer systems will be handed over to the holder of this role. Additionally, this role is likely to include responsibility for the set-up of new computer systems, and the connecting of experiment-specific externally-developed systems for defined periods.
The System Administrator is to work with the systems’ users to deliver computer resources to support the experimentation, development, integration and demonstration of novel concepts for the management of data and information. The internal project is responsible for managing and co-ordinating experimentation and demonstration systems across at least eight internal projects.
This role is planned to be 18 months in duration.
The key task is the administration of the ISEE project's experimentation computer systems. This must follow the system lifecycle model and therefore includes day-to-day and longer-term activities. As a minimum these are:
Operating system, firmware, application and antivirus definitions patching and updating
Ensuring availability of the computer systems and data through monitoring and maintenance
Maintaining accurate and comprehensive system documentation
Adding, updating and removing user accounts
Troubleshooting and resolving local and remote user queries
Temporarily joining and then disconnecting bespoke systems and equipment in support of project experiments
Provision, management and liquidation of virtual assets within the computer systems
Proposing, costing and implementing upgrades and improvements
Support all auditing needs of hardware assets, security logs and so forth
Checking, renewing and auditing licence usage
Load on and copy off data between these systems and corporate systems
Report to ISEE Infrastructure Lead for all requirements for additional hardware, software and/or licenses
Periodic build-out and tear-down of system client devices at experimentation tempo
experience in using and/or managing the following systems (or similar) is highly desirable:
Windows systems, including Windows 7, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Update Services.
Configuring Windows Active Directory, LDAP, and securing Group Policy for domain working and enterprise level architectures
Linux operating systems, specifically Ubuntu and CentOS 7, and Linux repositories
VMWare ESXi 5.x and 6, vSphere 5, Virtual Centre 5 and 6
HP server hardware, blade hardware, and SANs
NASs
Openstack Juno, including Neutron and Keystone
The following experience is desirable but not critical:
Local area networks
Wide area networks, including routing, firewalls and security
Knowledge of JSP440 and 604
Configuring web services
Awareness of NCSC good practice guides for virtualisation and cross-domain working.
A valid UK driving license and willingness to undertake occasional travel would be advantageous.
The key deliverables are:
Accurate and comprehensive high- and low-level system design and documentation
Available computer systems
Data loading and transfer to and from corporate systems
Support of organisational auditing of hardware, systems and workplaces
Support of system security accreditation
System maintenance and improvement plans and lifecycle management
Current MCSE qualification desirable.
